All pics credit Laurie Oliver Earlier in the week Clare Elms did what she does best and broke her own VW60 mile world record at Wimbledon, running over 6 seconds under her previous mark in 5:18.97. Molly O’Connor (5:22), Amelia Pettitt (5:30) and Dee O’Brien (5:44) also ran well.
Our fourth open event of the year is on Thursday 11 September – there will be 200m, junior 800m and 5000m races. If you’d like to race, please sign up below, but if you can’t race, please consider volunteering – events only happen with your help!

Richard Elliot has sent round the details by email and Whatsapp – it’s a 3.5 mile race starting at 1930, meet at the Victoria Park Harriers clubhouse at 1900 to pick up your number and register on the spreadsheet that will be available on the day.
RON HALE OPEN
Kent AC welcomed nearly 200 athletes from multiple clubs to our second Ron Hale Open meet, competing at sprints, hurdles, LJ and TJ, and 1500m. More than half the competitors were juniors, with S Factor and Southwark well represented against our youngsters. There was a very high quality of competition throughout.
There were two rounds of the 100m, eight hurdles races, plus 300m and 400m. In the 1500m, Cameron Dockerill ran an impressive 4:04 to win the Kent AC men’s club championships ahead of Nick Acfield and Dame Dibaba. Aisling Ahern won the women’s club championship in 4:49 ahead of Clare Elms, targettng another record just three days after her WR in Wimbledon, in 5:00, and Rebecca Palser 3rd in 5:04.

KENT AC NEWS BULLETIN
20 July 2025
For those who were lucky enough to be at the London Stadium yesterday for the Diamond League, we hope you enjoyed the show and brilliant events! Rain doesn’t stop play! Of course, that was just the warm up for the best open meet of July, which will take place at our very own arena next weekend. It’s your last chance to sign up so read the details below and get your entries in quick! It really will be an event for everyone, so come along and have some fun.
Lots of impressive and inspiring performances throughout the week too, kicking off wiuth Sarah Parry who completed the 10k Chase the Sun event at Victoria Park hitting a PB of 51:46 and coming first in her age category!
Further north, the legend of the trails herself, Vic Cartwright continued her track (trail?) record by coming 1st female at the St Aidan’s 10k trail race near Leeds. Even some angry geese couldn’t put paid to Vic’s smile and ability over off-road terrain! The podium places didn’t stop there, with Alex Hamlet coming 2nd in the Helvellyn 58k Skyrace in the Lake District, beating the previous course record in doing so! Brilliant!
Meanwhile, down south, Alex and Calum represented at the Brighton Phoenix 10km, with Alex running a PB of 38:41, and Calum running an impressive 33:53.
This week also saw some incredible performances at the BMC 3km at Sutcliffe Park. Well done to George Searle for running 9:48 and to Amy Clements for running 9:49 – a top 3 performance this year for the VW40 category no less!

KENT AC NEWS BULLETIN
13 July 2025
Hot (very hot, isn’t it, but that’s enough weather) off the press. Kent AC won today’s Southern Athletic League fixture at Eltham today, (Sunday 13 July). Full report on this excellent team effort next week. Many thanks to all the competitors and officials who worked so hard, especially Alex and Sofia.
Your Kent AC newsletter this week is being sent out by a 62-year-old-woman. A solipsistic start to the news, maybe, but read on to discover the relevance. Clare Elms ran 18:11:08 at the Tracksmith Twilight London 5000 in Battersea last Thursday. While the majority of 60-plus women, your editor included, were sitting around complaining about the heat and their ailments, this extraordinary athlete was smashing her own British W60 record by 24 seconds. A very happy Clare thanked her Kent AC colleague Richard Giles for perfect pacing. Clare Soars Power couple: with Richard pacer Giles
In other results from the Tracksmith fixture, Owen Hind ran 14:47, Noah Armitage-Hooks ran 15:06, Harry Tivnen PB-ed with 15:22, Matthew Speed 15:30, Jo Vis 15:50; Joe Hartley 15:51, Mikhail Krivomazov 15:52, Rob Laing15:56, Sam Dames 16:16, Alex Harris 16:54 and Philip Woodford Smith 17:28 Many congratulations to all.
On Friday, in cold, rainy conditions (what those?) in Poland, John Flack ran a new 400m PB of 49:20 in the under-18 Champs at Poznan and finished eighth. The winner ran 47.77.
Also today, over in Westminster, Saucony closed the traffic for a quick 10k, although most runners found it less than speedy, what with the crowds and the heat bouncing off the streets. We had several Kent AC athletes running, but the first to hit us with an entertaining action shot was Narciso, so we’ll celebrate his 54:25-minute result with this:
Narciso celebrates with a balloon
One way to avoid the horrors of road running in a heatwave is to enjoy a little run out of town, perhaps to the seaside or through bosky woodland. Sadly, you can take this advice to extremes, as Raymond Tedders and Ash Green did this weekend, with a 100k Race to the Stones along the sun-baked Ridgeway, which does include ancient forest as well as miles and miles of dusty chalk paths. In searing heat. Some people don’t know when to stop, although I read that the refreshment stations were very alluring. Well done to both ultrarunners.
TWO WEEKS TO GO
We will be hosting our next event at the Alex Yee Ladywell Arena on Saturday 26th July – the Ron Hale Open, which will have multiple track and field events.
These include the Sprint Hurdles, 100m, 300m, 400m and 1500m, and the Long Jump and Triple Jump.
Entries are open to everybody, both KAC members and members of other clubs (provided they have EA membership) – sign up here.
MEANWHILE, IN BIRMINGHAM
U17 girls Tess Hepple and Phoebe Folarin acquitted themselves in fine style. Both competed at the English Schools national championships in Birmingham on 11/12 July. Tess qualified to represent Kent in the 80m hurdles. Phoebe qualified to represent London in the high jump. Tess made it through to the final and came 6th with 11.52 secs. Phoebe came 11th with a jump of 1.57m. Huge congratulations to them – a massive achievement to participate in the games and to gain such crucial experience. Tess Hepple

KENT AC NEWS BULLETIN
6 July 2025
We had a fantastic turnout at the fourth Assembly League of the season in Sutcliffe Park on Thursday evening. A sea of navy vests took over the start line with seven of our own finishing in the top 10. Unfortunately still not an official 5k course, but close.
Jake Simmonds took the win in 15:25, followed a second later by Olly Buck in 15:26. Alex Hamlet, Jim Allchin, Chris Busaileh, Matt Speed and Rob Laing all crossed the line in under 16 minutes.
Amy Clements was our top female scorer and the first woman overall in a speedy 16:40. Molly O’Connor, in second place, showed an impressive kick to finish in 18:26. Ellie Freeden was our third scorer in 18:28, with Lin Skinner and Nesrin Sabanci completing the scoring team in 19:04 and 19:12 respectively.
See a full list of results here.
Well done to all that took part and a reminder that the penultimate Assembly League race of the year will be on 31st July in Victoria Park.
Assembly League #4
At the London 5000m at Parliament Hill on Friday evening, we had several strong performances:
Kurt Wilkinson – 15:12
Rhys Doherty – 16:14
Neil Philips – 16:19
In yesterday’s Kent Young Athletic League fixture in Gillingham, the U13 boys were so impressive. Everybody did their absolute best, getting us to third position late in the afternoon. This is division one, competing with the likes of Blackheath and Bromley, Ashford, and Tonbridge.
Otis got PBs in all his 3 solo events! Zac won the A hurdles by meters, but was still unhappy with his performance, and followed up with 2nd in the LJ. Emerson got 2nd in javelin with a huge PB.
Vwede got a PB in the 100m, with Matthew not far behind in 14.3. Vwede, Zac, Syon and Otis ran 56s in the 4×100 to finish 3rd.
With little training, and none with a real Hammer, Emerson and Matthew managed to get A and B scores in HT, getting us 3rd position! Jeremy, Flynn and Oscar ran well in the 1500m to get good points. Nico scored in the HJ, and would have improved if not interrupted by having to race 200m.
Well done athletes, great attitude from all of you!
Grins in Gillingham
Further south in Bewl today, a few took on the 15-miler and all finished in under two hours.
Ian Ellwood completed the course in 1:51:43, Robbie Spargo in 1:56:33, then Mary Brooking in 1:57:27 as 1st v50.
Sunshine and smiles
Our monthly social run takes place on Wednesday evening, starting from the track at 7pm. The route for this week is likely to be the Lewisham 3 peaks with Len, followed by drinks at the Catford Bridge Tavern if you fancy.
All welcome!
If you have a free Sunday next weekend, take part in the SAL in Eltham!
It is very local and we’re currently low on numbers, so sign up where you can to maximise our club points. Sign up here
