NEWS
Club Champs Postponed The Club Championships due to be held in July have been cancelled because of a lack of qualified officials to satisfy the race license from UKA. Events due to be held in July included the 100m, 800m and 1500m on Thursday 1st, and 200m, 400m and 3000m on Thursday 15th. Training will be as normal on these evenings. SAL Fixture 2 on 11 July in Eltham Well done to everyone who competed in this season’s first fixture of the Southern Athletics League (SAL). Kent AC scored 167.9 points in total which puts us 69th in the league (out of 87). The good news is that only our best single fixture counts towards our final score. So we have three more attempts to improve this. Also many thanks to those who volunteered at this event. Anyone who is interested in volunteering for this fixture, please do get in touch withIan EllwoodorVic Buck.
The points scoring system is a little different this year. We now get points for performance rather than finishing position. We can really improve this by filling out events better. It would be really to good to see us field men’s and women’s relays teams in both the 4x100m and the 4x400m.
The next fixture takes place on the 11 July at Sutcliffe Park, Eltham. It will follow a similar timetable to the previous event but this time will have a 3000m for men and 5000m for women. The steeplechase will be 3000m for men and 1500m for women.

OFF THE MARK AT THE SAL
Well done to everyone who competed at the Southern Athletics league in Eltham today. Particular thanks go to those who volunteered, your efforts are hugely appreciated.
Noteworthy performances of the day include wins in the 5000m from Joe Hartley and in the 1500m from Noah Armitage-Hookes as well as some great performances in the sprints against some talented opposition from Blackheath & Bromley.
The club finished 4th on the day out of 5 clubs (full results available online soon). The great news about this year’s league is that only our best day is used in the overall league.
With this in mind let’s really target the next fixture. It is also at Eltham on Sunday 11th July – it’s a fantastic and friendly day, so it would be great to see more Kent members involved.
Please contact Ian if you are available to volunteer. Qualified officials are particularly needed but no experience is necessary.

SAL – RUNNERS AND OFFICIALS NEEDED
*** Please see this version for correct sign up link***
For those of you not familiar with the Southern Athletics League (SAL), it is a track and field league which runs throughout the spring/summer. RUNNERS OF ALL ABILITIES ARE WELCOME AND THERE IS NO MINIMUM STANDARD.
The first meet is next weekend (starting at noon) and we are still looking for both runners and officials to be part of the day. The league is a great opportunity to race in a track meet, have fun and push yourself, as well as an opportunity to get to know members of the club better over the course of the afternoon!
We are also not getting any more of our K and KK numbers. If anyone has any from previous years then please bring them along.
QUALIFIED OFFICIALS NEEDED!!
We are really short on qualified officials and Kent AC needs to cover both the high jump and javelin events. If you can help with this can you please contact Ian. We currently have a few unqualified volunteers to help out but anyone else is very welcome. Officials will be required from 11.30.

ALEX YEE RUNS TO WORLD TRIATHLON CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES VICTORY IN LEEDS
A HUGE congratulations to club member Alex Yee on his dominant and impressive win in Roundhay Park on Sunday, at the AJ Bell 2021 World Triathlon Championship Series Leeds.
While Olympic selection is still to be confirmed it seems that Alex has more than demonstrated why he should be picked for the Olympic team with consistently solid performances and this recent win. We believe there is one more selection meeting before the final team will be selected in a few weeks. On behalf of all Kent AC members: Good luck Alex!!

TRACK
A WORD FROM ALAN CURTIS After what might have been the busiest ever Tuesday night training session, Club President Alan Curtis has this to say: “On Tuesday the track was buzzing with perhaps 150 – 200 people there, creating a great atmosphere. Following the taster day over 40 new juniors came along, many accompanied by parents.
“Track etiquette was adhered to and people remain disciplined in just attending their own session. Thanks to all members and especially the coaching team.”

(parkrun) BACK FOR FLAMING JUNE?
parkrun (always lower case) is expected to announce on 11th June whether UK events can recommence from 26 June. The decision is contingent on obtaining permission from about 90% landowners for events to go ahead. Currently 74% have done so; the latest list includes parkruns in Greenwich and Bromley but none of the Southwark and Lewisham parkruns- though there have been positive noises from these councils and decisions are expected shortly. We can also reveal that not one but two completely new south east London parkruns are in the final stages of planning – watch this space for further details.

GET READY TO RACE
The first fixture in the southern athletics league is only two weeks away. It will take place in Sutcliffe Park, Eltham on the 20th June. The schedule can be found via the following link: https://www.southernathletics.org.uk/assets/files/SALtimetablex.pdf For those of you not familiar with the SAL, this is a track and field league which ordinarily runs on 6 weekends throughout the spring/summer. There was no 2020 season due to Covid-19. This year they are holding four fixtures, subject to government guidelines on training and competition remaining unchanged.
For 2021 it has changed it to a local league, which has the upside of limited travelling. There will be no promotion or demotion in 2021. The other clubs in our league are:
Blackheath & Bromley Harriers
Cambridge Harriers
London City AC
Bexley AC
The SAL fixtures are open to all first claim members for Kent AC aged over 15 on 31 Aug 2020. Second claimers can also compete as long as their first club isn’t in the same league. Only athletes affiliated to England Athletics (or other home countries) will be able to compete. There is no minimum standard and everyone is welcome. If you are one of our two quickest entrants at the event you will be scoring for the club, otherwise you will run/throw/jump as a non-scorer.
The dates and locations of the later 2021 fixtures are as follows. All fixtures take place from late morning through to late afternoon:
11 July: Eltham (Sutcliffe Park)
14 August: Erith (TBC)
11 September: TBC
Putting on these events requires several volunteers from each participating club. If anyone is interested in helping out please let Ian Ellwood know, it would be great to see some new faces this year. No experience is necessary, there will be experienced officials there to show you what to do, but qualified officials are particularly welcome as it helps with point scoring.
Club Champs are back on for 2021. Provisional dates and events: Thursday 1st July – Sprints, 3000m
Thursday 15th July – Sprints, 800m
Thursday 29th July – 1500s
Thursday 19th August – 5000m
Please put the dates in your calendar. More details will follow soon.

THE YOUNG ONES
Our junior taster day was a great success: we reached our goal of recruiting 20 new junior member s to the club. Thanks again for all those who helped out.
We’d really like the young contingent to be the beneficiaries of our fundraising, as Coach Ted explains below:
Donations for Junior Track & Field development:
The past year has been very tough for us all and has highlighted what is dear to our hearts. For many of us, we have missed the camaraderie that comes with the club and our sessions and keeping this going for ourselves and the younger generation for the future is something we would like to uphold in 2021. With that in mind, we thought we could maintain the spirit of the past 3 years of raising funds for our track and field, although, not a requirement to securing a place. We are asking for your continued support, if you are able, as again we understand that 2020 has been very hard on a lot of people financially, but all contributions welcome no matter how small.
Our Justgiving page is below. Transfer your donations when you can. Don’t forget to press the Gift Aid button.
